Finding Your Colour Confidence

As my garden bursts into life and turns from green into a rainbow of flowers and blossom I am acutely aware of the joy it brings me. Whilst we embrace vibrant oranges and deep reds in the garden many of us are frightened to embrace colour in the same manner in our homes.

Colour is far more than just decoration; it’s a powerful tool that shapes how we feel, think, and interact in our homes. The psychology of colour is an extraordinary aspect of interior design, often overlooked in favour of trends or what others might think. But here’s the real secret: your home should reflect you & those you live with.  Your tastes, your comforts, and the colours that make your heart sing. When you design with intention and authenticity, the benefits ripple far beyond aesthetics to create a space that is a true reflection of your personality.

Embrace dark colours in dark rooms to create cosy spaces

Psychologically, colours have a profound impact on our mood and well-being. Soft blues and greens, for instance, are known to evoke calm and tranquillity, making them ideal for bedrooms or spaces where relaxation is key. These hues mimic the serenity of nature and can help lower stress levels, encouraging a sense of peace in your everyday life. At the other end of the spectrum, vibrant reds and oranges can energise a room, stimulating conversation and creativity,  perfect for dining rooms or home offices where you want a little spark.

Yellows bring warmth and optimism, often associated with sunshine and happiness, making them wonderful in kitchens or hallways where you want to create a welcoming feel. Meanwhile, earthy neutrals ground us, providing a sense of stability and comfort. By understanding these psychological cues, you can begin to craft spaces that truly support your emotional and mental well-being.

Using pink as a neutral

However, I encourage you to go a step further and trust yourself to design fearlessly by choose colours that resonate with your personal story. Too often, I meet clients paralysed by the fear of what others will think. Will visitors approve? Is this 'on trend'? The truth is, your home is your sanctuary, not a showroom. If a rich, jewel-toned purple makes you feel regal and empowered, embrace it! If a soft blush pinks bring you joy, don’t shy away because it could be considered ‘too feminine’ just use it!

Designing for yourself, rather than external validation, creates a home that nurtures your spirit every single day. Trends come and go, but the emotional comfort of a space that reflects you is timeless. So, as you plan your next room refresh or dream of a full redesign, give yourself permission to trust your instincts. Explore colours that uplift you, soothe you, or energise you; whatever your heart needs.

In the end, the best interiors are those that make you smile the moment you step through the door. Let colour be your ally in creating a home that doesn’t just look beautiful, but feels deeply personal and joyful. After all, true design success lies not in the approval of others, but in your own happiness.
